I WANT A GARDEN-THEMED FUNERAL

Just scatter my ashes somewhere in my garden
I think this ornamental grass would make a lovely tombstone

I saw an interesting thing in the paper recently about the Baby Boomer generation. Bless their hearts, the Baby Boomers have changed so much of this landscape we call life . Thanks to them once again, funeral services , as we know it, have changed as well. The traditional service is out, and a themed service, such as fish-related for an avid fisherman, golf-theme for the golfer, etc. are the latest trend. Making a CD of the service and sending it to relatives and friends who weren't able to attend the service is also popular.

I'm not planning any trips right now, but, when I go I want a garden-related funeral service. In other words, I want to be composted. I want my friends and family to read poetry, sip wine and sing beautiful songs. Then they can scatter my ashes in my garden so that I will continue to make a contribution, even in death.

Down South, funerals are very important events. My father, a poor farmer, saved every penny he could for burial insurance to make sure that he had a proper funeral. The insurance company of course robbed him because the amount he paid in premiums would have really sent him off in style. But he sacrificed a lot to assure that he'd have a proper funeral.

I have friends from New Orleans and believe-you-me, down there a funeral procession is a sight to behold. There's a parade of musicians, a horse-drawn carriage, mourners all decked out in their Sunday best, and flowers galore. If you've never seen a New Orleans-style funeral, then you've not really seen a very impressive one at all.

To me death, like life, is a passage to be noted. I thank the Baby Boomers for changing the traditional and often depressing funeral services. I used to dread going to funerals because I'd really rather celebrate the life of the dearly departed .

I'm Irish, so make my funeral a green one. Don't pay any attention to that Irish saying about " not cremating an Irish man because they'll burn for three weeks. " Just compost my ashes and bury them beneath the pear tree so that I will bear fruit.

THE GIANT RESPONDS TO MOI

The Remains of Walgreen's Frontyard

A few days ago I posted about what remained of Walgreen's once nice landscape and how I had written to this Corporate giant to let them know what I as a homeowner in the area thought of their frontyard. I had written the same complaint last year but had no response and wasn't expecting to get another one anytime soon.

Lo and behold I got an email from an " Exa " at the local Walgreens. I've been out of the white collar world for a while but for God's sake what is an '"Exa ?" Don't tell me it's short for Executive Assistant ? Hell, I was one of those and we called ourselves , " E. A. 'S . "

Anyhoo, Michael the "Exa " thanked me for patronizing his store and for bringing this " concern " to his attention. HELLO, Exa, how long have you been working there and didn't have a concern as you walked down the sidewalk that surrounds the remnants of a once well kept landscaped area ? I wonder if your front yard looks like this ?

He's sending my " concern " to their legal department because they lease the land from a property owner who no doubt should be responsible for its maintenance, considering the high amount of rent they pay.

He'll get in touch with me next week and "hopefully will have good news for both their store and the community. " Oh, Exa, I can't wait .

GARDEN BLOGGERS' MUSE DAY

JULY

lazy afternoons
perfumed by phlox
an orchestra
bumblebees, cicadas, cardinals
fill the hot air
the earth dry , thirsty
cries out for rain
Blackeyed Susan nods her pretty yellow head

one hundred degrees in the shade
i shall not complain
I remember
December

TAKING ON A CORPORATE GIANT

Welcome to Walgreens !?

This Walgreen Pharmacy is just around the corner from my house. It's not as if we live in a rundown slum, it is one of the best neighborhoods on the northside . When it first opened about 7 years ago, Walgreen's was beautifully landscaped with trees and shrubs. Over the years it was neglected and has fallen into ruin, as evidenced in the above photo.

Last year I contacted our Alderman and all of the Managers of the businesses in the strip mall - Walgreens, Staples, Blockbuster, etc. about their unkempt property. No response. Then, I contacted the headquarters of Walgreens in the Chicago suburbs. One year has passed and I've yet to hear anything.

The fact of the matter is that Walgreen's rents its space and that the landlord is really responsible for landscaping and maintenance, however, they've not even tried to get him to do it.

I can't forget this matter since I have to look at it everyday and everytime I pass it I cringe. I shot the photos above yesterday and sent off another email to Walgreen's.

I wonder if I'll ever hear from them . They are making plenty of money off the people in our community but they could care less what their frontyard looks like.

This time they've got " my Irish up " and I am determined to see this situation to the end. More on the results later.
