From ZERO TO 60 IN 3 DAYS

Three days ago it was Zero in Chicago. Today a lovely Southern wind brought us temperatures that broke the 1907 record of 54 degrees. It was a toasty 61 degrees . YES ! Sunday, January 6, 2008, sixty one wonderful degrees.

Of course this will probably be as fleeting as a snowball in hell but I just couldn't stay inside and not enjoy the balmy Chicago weather. It's nice to see green grass again.

Guess I won't be saying " That'll be a warm day in January " anymore.

  1. You might be saying "that'll be a warm day in January" tomorrow because it is supposed to be even warmer.

Warm here in Indy, too, but I don't know if we broke any records. I'm reminded of the stories I read as a kid, about how the pioneer kids would walk to school without their coats because it was so warm and then Bam! a blizzard would blow in and trap them all in the schoolhouse, where they waited to be rescued, shivering around the pot-bellied stove, burning their last piece of firewood.

    I hope we don't get a blizzard!

  2. Hard to believe it's so warm in January, Carol. That means my 'redneck refrigerator' ( back porch ) is out of commission .

I sure hope we don't get a blizzard either. I've had enough snow already.

  3. Not quite that warm here, but we are into a bit of a melt. There's grass on one part of the yard while just a few feet away, a big drift of snow continues to crest like a surfer's wave. I actually prefer the snow to the drab yuckies, but we'll see what the next few days bring.

  5. We shattered the old record here today! I can't see much grass yet but I'm hoping for a bare patch tomorrow along with a new record. I'm sure we'll pay for this great weather later but for now I'm going to enjoy it!

  6. I guess you haven't lived here long enough to become well acquainted with the January thaw. Usually it arrives mid-to late month, but everything seems a bit ahead this Winter. If only the pattern would continue so we'd get an early Spring. According to my garden journal, in 1996, it was 61F on January 18th, only to go down to -22F on February 3d. Enjoy it while we've got it.
