House with a Sunny Disposition
There's a popular joke about a patient going to the doctor for pain in his arm. Lifting his arm he tells the doctor that it hurts when I do this. The doctor replies, " Then don't do that ! "
For the past few Winters I've not only had seasonal disorder but a mysterious angry red rash on my neck and arms. After trying just about every over the counter remedy I gave up and sought a doctor's advice. I told him the rash only appears in Winter and mysteriously disappears when Spring arrives.
I asked if I could be allergic to Winter and he said, " Most definitely. " So, my stalwart Winter-loving friends, I have a great prescription for the Epatoozies ( Southern for unknown malady ) that I've come down with. Doc says get out of town and he was very specific about it , the sunny Southland is where he said I should go for the cure.
SO, you'll hear me humming a little tune .... "I'm Alabammy bound, I'm Alabammy bound...There'll be no heebie-jeebies hanging 'round ...... "
It may be some time before I file a report of my road trip but I figure that my next posting will find me rash free and as happy as a pig in mud. Somewhere down in sunny Florida.

Sounds like fun, Carolyn. I'm envious...and I LOVE the word epatoozies. Sounds like Lowell's word gignoggle, which is a mess of any undefined sort, be it a tangle in lobster buoy lines, too much bishop's weed, or a throw-up of cathair. (Ick).

ReplyDeleteThe same thing has happened to me the past few winters. I've found that one 15 minute trip to a tanning bed will end weeks of that miserable rash.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad that a tanning bed helped your rash. The only thing that will cure mine and the seasonal disorder is a visit to my sunny southland !
Have fun! And to your question as to why the creator created winter...for me, because I would never get anything done inside, if I could garden year-round!

You know, it was the Epitoozies that got me into gardening. I used to get all depressed in winter because everything was drab and gray and cold and I had a crappy job at the time. Teresa would always plant a few pots of pansies and I started noticing them (I was a 27 year old guy, so it took some time)and I found that just the sight of them cheered me up considerably. So the next fall, I cleared out a huge bed, went to the nursery and splurged on about 12 flats of the brightest pansies I could find, and got down on my hands and knees and started digging. I know now that I could probably have spent the money much more wisely on perennials, but I didn't know much about plants at the time, except that coming home to a bright expanse of flowers in winter changed something inside of me.

ReplyDeleteNew Jerseyans, Illinoians, just about everybody and there Uncle go to Florida. Why Florida ? Well I do love the weather which is consistently WARM, but I have friends from Chicago that moved down there and they invited us to visit them last year. We are hookedd ! Who wants to be in Chicago during February ( or January for that matter ) when you could be soaking up the Vitamin D in sunny Florida .
Why Bobbyearl, I'm so pleased to hear that you got into gardening because of the epitoozies ! But 12 flats of pansies?! You must've been loaded with fresh cash. I just love Pansies and their cheerful faces would really banish any blues. Are they annuals down there ? Sometimes they'll come back in the Spring here if the Winters aren't too cold.
ReplyDeleteAt least we can relish these past few nice warm days! It was 52 degrees here yesterday (se Iowa) and I hope it'll be the same again today. I'm headed for an Epitoozie-curing walk with a friend! ;-)
