MR. BROWN THUMB IS ALIVE AND WELL

Blue Horse
from my Cavescape series

While I was away down in Florida I neglected my regular visits to favorite blogs . When I returned after a month I discovered that my fellow Chicago blogger and virtual friend Mr. Brown Thumb had suddenly stopped blogging on January 13, which was very unusual for him, a frequent poster.

There were more than 48 messages left on his last post inquiring about his well-being and I know many people emailed him as well. He and I had exchanged a few emails and I recalled in one of them that he said he was a member of a certain garden forum so I went there in search of him.

After two days I received a message from him saying he way okay. He said he was touched that I was looking for him and asked " Has it been that long ? Two months and no posts? Yah, long in my book. You had a l of us thinking dire thoughts, Mr. Brown Thumb. Now we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

I know that all his fans and followers will be very happy to hear that is safe and well. The garden blog world wouldn't be the same without him.

  1. How sweet - I really enjoyed reading your blogs tonite - I live in Queensland Australia and moved into a unit a year ago. My husband and I are on our own now as our three girls have all married so we are temporarily in a lovely unit on a canal on the coast while we build some investment homes, BUT I miss my garden. I have a balcony with herbs etc and love that but I will love to get a garden again - 12 months time! In the meantime I will enjoy your blogs. Your rabbit blog reminded me of Beatrix Potter! I have started a fun website - http://lovelifeormoney.blogspot.com if you are interested in taking a peak. Thank you again!

  5. Thanks, hobby swap. It is difficult to tell oils from acrylics isn't it. It is the latter which I use because I'm SO impatient for oils to dry.

  8. Hi Carolyn,
I just stumbled across your blog and have to tell you that I love your writing style. I was hooked from the very first line when reading about Mr. Brownthumb and HAD to know that he was ok. So glad to hear that he is.

I just moved from CA to TX and am having such a time adjusting to the "soil" here. Actually, it's not soil, it's rock! We had a very small property in CA which I crammed full of cottage style flowers and roses. Here...Lots of property, some oaks, and lots of rocks. I think raised bed gardening is my answer. Wish me luck!

  13. Mr. Brown Thumb? I've not made his acquaintence, but how could I not try now that I know of him and his really cool blog name! I shall sally forth and check him out, and am pleased to hear your friend is okay. Debi @ GHT

  14. Me, too, Nancy and Lintys. I am so relieved that he's okay. I was really worried since it wasn't like him to just drop out of sight for so long.

  18. What a nice person you are to have searched for Mr. Brown Thumb. So glad he is alive and well. That does seem like a long time to go without posting something, way to follow up!

  19. Why thank you, Frances. I was genuinely concerned because he and I were good virtual friends and I knew that it wasn't like him not to keep up with his blog. As a matter of fact he runs several different ones so I know him to be a passionate blogger.

  21. Whew. Though some part of me will refuse to believe this until he posts something again.

Would you bring Tracy back too, as an encore?

  22. mr_subjunctive,

Thanks for stopping by. He assured me he would be blogging again as soon as he gets his computer together.

I'm not familiar with Tracy. Will have to check her out.

  23. Well, talk about great minds...I was wondering if I should contact you and ask about MBT. The last time I talked with him he said he'd had some computer issues, and then he hadn't posted and hadn't posted, and I kept reading the worried comments...so this is a very good thing to hear. I know some bloggers like to take a break from blogging, but he's so prolific and knowledgeable; so thanks so much, Carolyn, for letting us know.

  24. you have the right to behonoured. You got a spectacular theme and design.I love it

  25. Thanks, Jodi. Knowing MBT I thought it was very unlike him to just stop without saying anything. He not only does the MBT blog but several others as well. I thought that something was amiss and so I spent some time to try and track him down. Thank goodness I found him or I'd still be fretting.

  29. Carolyn, I'm very glad you were able to reach Mr Brown Thumb. I am grateful for all the help he gave when a website reposted gardenblogs without credit or permission. I hope all goes well with him and that his indoor plants have cheered him up through the rough winter you folks have had.

  32. Hi Annie,

I do remember that episode that he helped you with. He was very helpful to me as well when I first started out and I consider him a mentor of sorts. Plus, he has a very interesting and informative blog and it wouldn't be the same without him.

  34. you are so sweet......

did you paint on clay or raised surface? ~ looks like. It's lovely, I am sure you are inspired by the cave of lascaux in france - very haunting those are.

glad to read all is doing well here + busy ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks, Ingar. I used a regular canvas but layered it with a heavy acrylic modeling paste to get the effect of a cave wall.

The caves of lascaux in France are indeed haunting but I find those in Korea much more remarkable in design and age !

  37. Hi there!
I wonder if you could give me some advise on how to plant and grow tulips. I know for a fact that I should get some tulip bulbs. But I am not into gardening, it's just that spring time is here and would be nice to try tulips for a change in my garden.
A simple advice for gardening neophytes like me would be a big help.
    Thanks a lot!

  38. Hi mystique and thanks for stopping by. Since Spring is here why not just buy some tulips already in bloom for your indoor garden? After they've finished blooming you can allow the bulbs to rest, store them in a cool spot until Fall and then plant them in your garden.

Tulips and Spring-flowering bulbs must be planted in the Fall if they are to bloom the following Spring.

  39. Many people concerned him when he suddenly never wrote blogs.
You definitely felt happy when you learned that Brown was actually fine.
    Have a nice day.

  40. Hello! What is the medium of "Blue Horse" its beautiful!

  41. Hi Coolingstar9 all the way from Singapore ! Thanks for stopping by and leaving your nice comments.

  42. Thanks so much, Davidicus. From one artist to another, I'll take that as the supreme compliment .

I used a textured medium ( modelling paste ) to create a cavewall effect and then I painted with my favorite medium, acrylics.

    The secret is out :)

  43. Great sleuthing job! Earlier this evening I went to Mr. Brown Thumb's blog to see if he responded to all the queries and was despondent when there wasn't a reply. I'm relieved all is well.

Lovely painting. My bias but I would like to see the horse a bit more to the right of the painting as if it were entering instead of leaving. Just a bit of psychology in how we see things and how the brain/eye views a scene.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks, Ki. MBT should be back again soon or so he says.

Thank for the compliment on my painting. My painting style is more intuitive and therefore I never stopped to think about the horse entering instead of leaving.
