MARCH
Through all the frozen winter
My nose has grown most lonely
For lovely, lovely, colored smells
That come in springtime only.
The purple smell of lilacs,
The purple smell of lilacs,
The yellow smell that blows
Across the air of meadows
Where bright forsythia grows.
The tall pink smell of peach trees,
The tall pink smell of peach trees,
The low white smell of clover,
And everywhere the great green smell
Of grass the whole world over.- Kathryn Worth, Smells

Well, Spring is closer than it has been. Love the article on health benefits of gardeners, and what a precious fairy container garden!
ReplyDeleteHappy March Muse Day, Carolyn! Your poem/photo is lovely and full of hopeful spring dreams. Mine is up also :)
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Carolyn... I also miss those lovely colored smalls like lilac and clover - but spring will not bring them to Austin and even the grass smells different here.
ReplyDeleteHere's a cartoon with verse for Muse Day. Hope spring gets to you soon.

ReplyDeleteAren't we all wishing for May? At least today's clear and bright :)
ReplyDeleteMarch is always a very special month for me and I've found just the right poem to do it justice.
Happy Muse Day everyone!
The poem is wonderful! I just wish I could have a day without boots.

Carolyn, my nose has been very lonely for the smells of spring color, as well;-)

Carolyn,
ReplyDeleteLovely. I'm new to the genre but I've left my offering on my blog. While tulips have no scent, they are for me the quintessential flower of spring. Fear not--today is the first day of meteorlogical spring anyway!
Yes, we're all dreaming of May this dreary March morning. :) Lovely photo to go with a great poem.
ReplyDeleteMy offering is up: http://wp.me/p2bM3-1d9
Dear Carolyn Gail, a perfect poem to express our feelings of anticipation coupled with tiredness of winter and the lack of blooms and colorful scents. Soon, perhaps this month, we will smell those smells again! Here is my submission to your wonderful meme:

Carolyn gail - your poem has so captured the longing we are feeling. My post is up. Thank you for this meme.
ReplyDeleteOh yes Carolyn your poem hits the nail on the head :) There is not so much scent in the winter and it's a joy to see it return in the garden. Here it is the honey scent of snowdrops that are giving me great pleasure at the moment. My muse day post is up now.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, I've been lonely for the smells of spring! The fragrance of lilacs would be heavenly right now. And I can't wait to see beautiful spring bulbs like yours, Carolyn!
ReplyDeleteMy Muse Day post is finally up, too--it was hard to get inspired this month, but the promise of spring helps:)
Enjoyed your last post on the health benefits of gardening. I think the psychological benefit is beyond compare, but it's good to know that I don't have to feel bad about not doing aerobics. I'll sure get my weight-training exercise in this spring toting bags of soil and compost:)
Carolyn, You are looking forward (beautifully) and I took one more glance backwards... ;-) Yes, my post is up. Have a great week - and let's all look forward to the advance of Spring!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was cutting back dead tops of cymbopogon today, the lemon smell was wonderful, even in the dead leaves. Spring will come again.
ReplyDeleteLocal TV news said that March came in like a lamb. It was certainly lamb-like here and I got lots of chores done. Tomorrow's rain leads to more cold weather, typical of March.
My first muse day post! http://ginnysgarden.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteThank you all for joining the March poetry circle. I and all who visit here will visit your gardens for your musings.
ReplyDeleteJust found you after visiting Shady.
ReplyDeleteAm I too late?
I'm hoping that by the first of next month I won't be feeling like this any longer.

The "smells of spring".....that's my favorite part of spring and your poem selection says it so well. Look at all those beautiful flowers (and the bunny) in your photo.....gorgeous.
