Garden Bloggers' Muse Day

  Wintry View from my Window by yours truly

"How like a winter hath my absence been

From thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year!

What freezings have I felt, what dark days seen!

What old December’s bareness every where!

And yet this time remov’d was summer’s time;

The teeming autumn, big with rich increase,

Bearing the wanton burden of the prime,

Like widow’d wombs after their lords’ decease:

Yet this abundant issue seem’d to me

But hope of orphans and unfather’d fruit;

For summer and his pleasures wait on thee,

And, thou away, the very birds are mute:

Or, if they sing, ’tis with so dull a cheer,

That leaves look pale, dreading the winter’s near."

- William Shakespeare,

Just like Willy I don't look forward to winter and I am certainly beginning to feel " dreading the winter's near. "   Hurry, May !

  1. Poignant poem . . . no one can say it quite like William. It is raining here! Hardly feels like winter, but I know it will be here soon enough. Thankful for a mild November. Happy December Carolyn Gail. I posted a poem in honor of your Muse Day. http://flowerhillfarm.blogspot.com/

  2. Carolyn, I forgot to say how much I LOVE YOUR PAINTING! BEAUTIFUL! It has a wonderful feeling and energy about it . . . with all the windows, chimneys and houses, you can imagine all the people safe and warm inside from the cold and snow. There are no fires yet, so I see them all still sleeping under down comforters, wearing their night caps!

  3. Your painting is beautiful. It doesn't show any fear at all. Of course looking out at snow if often a lot more enjoyable than being out in the snow. I do love my fireside. My post about Thoreau is up, with a reminder about my Giveaway.

  4. You've confirmed my belief that Shakespeare had the perfect quote for every situation, Carolyn Gail! I awoke this morning to a light dusting of snow, the first of the year here, so I'm afraid winter is really here to stay.

    My Muse Day post is up now, too.

    P.S. Looking forward to seeing my new issue of Horticulture and reading your interview.

  6. Our view is a similar wintry one too Carolyn but consoling myself with Shelley's words "If winter comes, can spring be far behind? " :)

  8. Carolyn, being born and raised on the northside, there's something very familiar and nostalgic for me in the feeling of this painting. Lovely!

    Sure did feel like winter today. Brrr. . . . !

  13. Hi Anna,

    Saw some of your wintry weather on the news. It seems you've had worse than us here in Chicago. I'll be over soon to read your selection and I thank you for your contribution.

  14. Hey Linda,

    It's a typical backyard scene where the garage is located on the alley and everyone is snowbound inside their homes. This was painted during a February blizzard a few years ago.

  15. Hi Carolyn - we're having an early start to winter here, so I decided to counter the icy blast with a very cheerful carol for Muse Day :)
