THE BEST THERE IS

You haven't lived until you've tasted Fried Green Tomatoes !

I don't wait for my tomatoes to get ripe, just big. That's about the time I get a craving for my favorite fried green tomato dish.

This is the recipe I use, straight from Sipsey Peavey, Whistle Stop Cafe, Whistle Stop, Alabama which was made famous by Fannie Flagg's FRIED GREEN TOMATOES :

3 tbs. bacon grease
4 tomatoes-green, firm, sliced ( thick )
2 eggs, beaten
flour
salt
pepper

Heat bacon grease in a heavy frying pan ( cast iron is best ) . Dip tomato slices in egg and then in bread crumbs or cornmeal. Slowly fry until golden brown on both sides. Place tomatoes on plate. Stir in one tablespoon flour for every tablespoon grease in pan , blend well and add one cup warm milk. Stir constantly. Pour over fried green tomatoes. Add salt and pepper until you like it. The best there is !

For those of you watching your cholesterol, you can substitute olive oil but it won't taste as good. I once saw Dolly Parton on the Johnnie Carson show talking about how she loved bacon grease and would have her cook make a batch of bacon. She picked the bacon out of the grease and poured the grease in a bowl and proceeded to dip her biscuit in it. The cook almost died of
shock ! You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl.

T.G.I.F. y'all !

  1. This looks fantastic. I tried to fried green tomatoes a few times, but was not impressed. I didn't know about pouring a gravy sauce over them. I'm gonna try it, and as far as cholesterol? Forgetaboutit!! (For now at least)

  2. Hi Marie. Thanks for stopping by. We pour gravy over everything down South. Did you mean you were not impressed by the taste of the fried green tomatoes you made ?

Maybe bacon grease is the answer !

  3. I love my mom's fried green tomatoes! I do try to watch the cholesterol, and rarely fry anymore. I will sometimes make exceptions for fried okra because my son loves it. I used to use bacon grease all the time, but I don't do bacon anymore either. Why is all the good stuff bad for you? Southerners know how to cook!

  4. I'm going to be trying this too! I love green tomatoes even raw (but try to restrain nyself because they're slightly poisonous I believe)and love the film Fried Green Tonatoes. So I've always wondered what the recipe was.
Your Dolly Parton story reminded me of when I was a kid. Not only would we fry bread in bacon grease, but also save the fat fron roast chickens, let it solidify in the fridge, and then spread it on toast, with a bit of salt. Now there's cholesterol for you. But possibly the most delicious thing I've ever tasted in my life ...

  5. Hey Robin,

I don't fry food that much anymore either, but fried green tomatoes is an exception.

I ate a lot of the good Southern cooking growing up on the farm but I guess the hard work kept me skinny.

  9. Those look so good I can almost taste them. My grandmother introduced me to fried green tomatoes when I was young. She didn't use bacon grease but it does sound good.

  10. Hey Beverly,

Bacon grease rules in the South. You may have heard Chef Emeril say that " Pork fat " rules.

Thanks for stopping by. Y'all come again real soon.
