Spring 2007
Being able to look at last year's Spring photos is one thing that's great about blogging. Yesterday was a balmy 60 degrees and of course I got the fever and spent the entire afternoon in my garden.
Not a lot is up yet and I don't want it to be because , lesson learned, freezes in April can quickly kill. I raked up excessive build-up of leaves, leaving a light layer to cover emerging bulbs.
I started formulating plans for the new season and found extra space in my small urban back 40 to add more containers for growing veggies and herbs. There's an unused space between me and the neighbors that I want to spruce up with colorful potted plants.
I can hardly wait until my garden looks like the photo above.

Yes, you're right. Last year we had a wonderful spring. I remember here in Michigan I had the garden all squeaky clean very early but then it got cold again because we didn't put the annuals in until the frost free date.(Normally I can go a week or two early) I guess you just never know, so go by instinct. I'd love to stand in the snow drifts and start clean the leaves around the garage but I know I'll be tempting fate for sure then.
ReplyDeletecarolyn - I was actually off yesterday but somehow did NOT make it outside other than to look around for a bit. I spent most of the day calling contractors for patios and bathrooms. I can't wait for spring, too!
ReplyDeleteWasn't it gorgeous yesterday! Spring fever is spreading rapidly throughout the Chicago metropolitan area!
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying your blog. Came across your website googling for Korean food...it took me a while to understand the Korean connection, but love your photos & recipes. You are a master Korean cook as well as gardener!
ReplyDeleteJust did a mandu write up on my blog if you'd like to visit tastememory.com
Thanks for the gardening tips - i need help in that area!
60 sounds good! We are having a bit of rain/sleet, but hopefully gradually warming temps in our future here in Utah. Got my pics back from my daughter, who has returned from the headache clinic, with some improvement and additional strategies to help her migraines, thanks for asking. I posted a nice pic of you (and me blabbering away as the shutter clicked!) - come on over and see when you get a chance!
ReplyDeleteWe have waited too long for this Spring, but it's finally here! It was so great to get out in the garden & see what was coming up & what was blooming.
ReplyDeleteIt was a lovely day here too, Carolyn. It's rainy today though. I'm glad I took advantage and volunteered to clean up in our wooded common area.
ReplyDeleteHi, Ingar of Tastememory and thanks for stopping by my Sweet Home and Garden Chicago.
ReplyDeleteI do indeed love mandu and have fond memories of making it with my Korean Mother-in-law, my master chef and teacher.
I will be sure to visit your blog frequently to learn more trade secrets !
Hi jane marie,
ReplyDeleteWe're having another lovely day in Chicago again. Hope it's nice in Michigan.
Hi Muum,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great post about our meeting.
I'm glad to hear that your daughter has some improvement and hope that it will get better soon.
Hey Chicago girls -lintys, Mr. McGregor's Daughter and Gina -
ReplyDeleteIt was grand yesterday and it's grand again today. I'm crossing my fingers for an early Spring with no freeze in April !
Rosemarie suggested that perhaps we Chicago bloggers should meet up sometime this summer. How would a trip to the Botanic garden or the Morton Arborteum sound ?
Hi Robin,
ReplyDeleteYou must be warmer than us since you're about 4 hours south . Please don't send us the rain, the soil is waterlogged.
I was checking back to last year's photos also for GBBD, and we could actually see the ground then. This year it is a little different. Even though we have reached 6 celsius today (about 42F) it still looks like winter.
ReplyDeleteHi crafty,
ReplyDeleteForty two is warm for you up there isn't it ? This is good news and I hope it'll continue. Please don't send us any gifts in the form of a Canadian cold front !
So you even raked??? Good for you girl ... I'm envious, Carolyn. Though today was in the 50s and I see swelling buds on trees, my back yard (gardens) are still covered in snow! (I continue to cook and photograph ... inside).
ReplyDeleteYes, Joey , the last bit of snow melted away with the two great Spring-like days we had.
ReplyDeleteI know you've always got something good cooking!
I love your wrought iron fence; nothing better to back up a garden (unless maybe it's a three century old stone wall in england all covered with moss). Beautiful spring shot.

I'd love to have a three century old stone wall covered with moss but alas my tiny urban garden must do with the wrought iron.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by.
Thanks for the welcome....Love stopping by your blog/site ~ I really feel like I've pulled up a chair over a cup of dandelion tea to chat for a moment ;-)
ReplyDeletetake care,
~I
