RESERVE YOUR PLACE IN GARDENING BLOG HISTORY

Sweet Home and Garden Chicago, Circa 2009

Frances of Fairegarden wrote a very thought- provoking post on January 22 titled What Will Happen to the Blog ? There were over 70 comments and a lot of interesting suggestions but none had an answer on how to permanently preserve our work for future generations.

If you type your blog name into Google or Bing you and your posts will no doubt appear on every subject you have tagged. But for how long ? If you were to stop blogging, eventually the search engines will stop as well.

Enter the Internet Archive, a library whose mission it is to preserve digital artifacts for use by researchers, historians and scholars. They collaborate with the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian. I visited the Home and Garden registry and found the personal pages of notable garden bloggers such as Maydreams Gardens, Gardening Gone Wild, This Garden is Illegal, Garden Rant, Hayefield, and Doug Green .

The Internet Archive is run by volunteers and they are asking for an editor. The directory on garden bloggers is in need of work and I hope that one of you will volunteer for the job. Visit DMOZ. ORG. for further information.

FYI , the Internet Archive does not give free reign for your work to be copied and the Creative Commons License applies. The Grateful Dead is the first major band to allow use of its music at the IA. so long as its not for profit or commercial use.

Just imagine after we are long gone to that great garden in the sky that our offspring can find our creative work in the Internet's library .

  1. Wow, Carolyn, how interesting about the archive. Somehow it makes me feel better. I wish I had time to be an editor too. Frances's post really resonated with me as well.~~Dee

  3. Hi Carolyn, thanks so much for helping me to see the light! (And thanks for the link love, too, my friend.) I will now sign up, on your say so. Whenever there is a read terms of agreement type of thing, I do read it and must have misunderstood what they were saying.

  6. As always, a thoughtful post, Carolyn. I haven't signed up for that yet either, so it's on my list of to dos for this week. Thanks for sharing the information in your usual supportive way.

  7. Is DMOZ an archive? I've always thought they were just a directory. I wonder if my account there is still active.
