Today is Earth Day and much has been written and shown in the Media about how we can be greener. I think we gardeners are among the most environmentally aware people on earth but the story that impressed me the most is about the little town of Stelle, Illinois that is only one and a half hours drive from Chicago.
Back in the early'70's being green wasn't a big priority and was looked on as something odd. That's when some Chicago ex-pats decided to create their own sustainable living community in Stelle with solar panels and bales of straw. They also went native with the plants and grew their own food. Imagine that. Pretty amazing to most people in this day and time but it was a lot like the life I had growing up.
Stelle is having it's own Earth Day Open House because people have become curious and wanted to visit the self-sustaining community. They'll have tours of their orchard, sheep farm and straw-bale houses, hands-on workshops, and a l restaurant's menu will feature food from local farmers and growers.
You can visit these real eco-pioneers at centerforsustainablecommunity.org.
carolyn - what an interesting post for Earth Day. I had no idea this community existed but I'm eager to check it out now. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
ReplyDeleteps thanks for the advice on the trees. I think i'm going to go get that royal star since that was carol's pick, too.
Happy Earth Day, Carolyn!
Sounds like my kind of place. Wish I could visit it. I will click on the link you provided; that will be the next best thing.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Bluegrass barbee. You have a wonderful blog and I'm adding it to my wonderful list of gardens to visit.
ReplyDeleteI also did not know about this community - thanks for the info. Happy Earth Day!
ReplyDeletevery interesting post Caroline. I'd never heard of Stelle before.
ReplyDeleteAlthough our home wasn't green, my parents, especially my mom, were always environmentally conscious. I got teased as a kid because of it, but I was grateful and proud of how my family lived and gardened. Still am.
Thanks for opening my eyes to Stelle!
It sounds like a wonderful community. I'd love to be able to afford solar panels. Wouldn't it be great if we could all do more to live more like that? It takes a lot of knowledge though.
ReplyDeleteYou're most welcome, MMD. Would love to be able to visit it myself some day.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to have parents such as yours that set a good example and look how you turned out : )
ReplyDeleteThere's one building a block from my home that has solar panels. I know that they're expensive to install but pay for themselves eventually.
ReplyDeleteIt would be great if we could all live like that. It may be possible one of these days.
Whooo! green but Uuugly. Couldn't they have sited those panels a little less conspicuously?
ReplyDeleteYou would've thunk, Ki. Guess pretty was not in the plans.
ReplyDeleteWow, wish that I could have been there for that. Sounds right up my street! :)
ReplyDeleteMe, too, Mo.
ReplyDeleteThis is really cool - I had never heard of Stelle, IL. And my hubbie and I were just discussing solar panels over bfast this morning.
ReplyDeleteHi rosemarie,
ReplyDeleteSave up your money 'cause solar panels cost a chunk of change.
I had never heard of Stelle before either but found it very interesting. Hope to visit it one day.
