Yesterday we were walking to a nearby neighborhood event and took a new route . The street was lined with beautiful homes but the frontyards were beyond belief. My mouth was hanging open for a few blocks.

For the life of me I couldn't even begin to imagine why a homeowner in a nice neighborhood doesn't give a thought to how their public face looks.

I didn't have my digital camera with me so I used my cell phone. I was surprised that the photos came out as well as they did.

An apparent need to obliterate the house ?

A house hugger

This is not Iowa people !

Fake flowers among the real . Who are you kidding?

This frontyard was the worse I've ever seen. It was packed to the gills with everything imaginable. There was even a kitchen sink. Oh, and a big fat fake snake dangling from a tree !

I'd like to be the garden czar for this new administration. I'd issue tickets to homeowners with bad landscapes and make so much revenue we wouldn't need a bailout. Honestly, if bad taste were a crime, the homeowners on this block would be wanted in every state in the U.S. of A!

  1. Not a pretty sight! Although I think we may have a person in our neighborhood who might have this person beat!

  2. Ewwww those are awful!!! That one house looks haunted its so covered. Believe it or not around the corner from me someone has the pig statue. But he's a police officer. I wonder if that guy is too. Is it some secret cop code we don't know?

  3. I think it was John Saladino who said, "Every night I pray that people with taste will get money and people with money will get taste."

  4. LOL.

Is it wrong that I like that cluttered garden?

And as for lawn ornaments, I've seen worse. One of the ones I like in my neighborhood I call the "snob forest." Every animal imaginable is showcased and all the animals are facing the house with their backs turned to the street and passerby.

    It is hilarious.

btw, if those are bad gardens, remind me to never show you mine. :0)

  5. Wow, you are one tough critic! Though I must admit, there is nothing more fun than trolling a neighborhood and pointing out how I'd do it! The Saladino comment is perfect.

  6. Hi Dave from the beautiful state of Tennessee. I guess I didn't fully capture the long view of most of these bad yards because they were taken with my cell phone. You really think you can beat these? Must really be an eyesore.

  7. Hi Debbie,

Yes that house does looked haunted because when a yard is so overgrown it usually means neglect.

Your police officer neighbor must have a sense of humor. My neighbors across the street had a 600 lb. pig statue and someone stole it. They had to lift it over a 5 foot fence because the gate was locked. LOL. I wasn't sorry about that pignapping.

  8. Good one,Nelljean. Hadn't heard that one before.

  9. MrBrownthumb, I don't think I fully captured that cluttered yard because I didn't have my digital camera with me. It was the most god awful I've ever seen. Every inch was filled with junk. I guess my shot was one of the better corners. You had to be there and then if you said you liked it I would think there were a few loose screws :-)

MBT,speaking as a garden designer it is my opinion that frontyards should have a pleasing design. I'm not suggesting that it needs to be formal but even informal landscapes can be both loose and lovely. Did you know that a good landscape adds up to 30 per cent value to property? I wouldn't want to be the realtor on any of these examples.

Backyards are where a lot of homeowners tend to let their creative juices flow.

I'm sure you're exaggerating about your garden. I know you're a plant collector not a garden designer which doesn't mean that you can't have some sort of pleasing design.

  10. Ha ha ha! I love that last one. Sometimes it takes a real giant step back to see what everyone else sees.

  11. Hi Ms. Wisconsin,

You don't have to be tough to cringe at those landscapes . The other people in my group , none of whom were gardeners or landscapers, kept saying OMG.

I walk a lot and try to take new routes each time just so I can see the gardens. I've found some areas where everyone takes pride in their landscapes and then there are those that have none at all.

  12. Hey Rosemarie,

Long time no hear. How are ya?

Yeah that last one with the fake snake and wheelbarrow full of fake flowers could've won the Redneck yard of the week !
